facility, and contact them. The Cord Blood donation facility will send
you a comprehensive questionnaire and Cord Blood donation application.
Since you are donating Blood, there is a lot That the Cord Blood bank
needs to know about your medical history.
You will fill out the Cord Blood form and send
it back to them before your 35th week of pregnancy. The Cord Blood
center will review your application, call you with any questions and
approve or reject you based on the application that you have submitted
to that Cord Blood center of Cord Blood bank.
If you are approved they send you a Cord Blood

staff/midwife will collect the Blood from your baby’s umbilical cord,
as well as a sample of your Blood for testing. Then, within two hours
you, your midwife, partner, or whomever, will call the Cord Blood

International Cord Blood Registries
-
Bone Marrow Donors Worldwide:
Despite the name, both bone marrow and cord blood registries are included.
Members can search look-up tables of HLA types.
Most of the world's registries for bone marrow and cord blood can be found
from the BMDW website:
-
NETCORD
is an international consortium of 15 cord blood banks (as of Aug2004),
located mostly in Europe but also including Tokyo and the NY Blood Center.
Their registry can be searched by physicians.
-
AsiaCORD
is an Asian consortium modeled on NETCORD.
The purpose of AsiaCORD is to promote a pan-Asian supply of cord blood units,
because of the higher frequency of HLA matching within Asian populations.
To realize this, a major requirement is
establishment of international standards of cord blood banking.
AsiaCORD is developing cord blood standards based on the American Association of Blood Bank standards,
and will apply them overriding national stnadards of the participating countries.
-
Caitlin Raymond International Registry ,
operated by the mother of Caitlin Raymond, works as a clearinghouse for
patients seeking stem cell donors. They post a
list of international cord blood registries .
-
Information Centers:
- IBMTR & ABMTR stands for
International Bone Marrow Transplant Registry &
Autologous Blood and Marrow Transplant Registry.
They are not donor registries.
They are a collaboration of clinical scientists who study the outcome of
allogenic (IBMTR) and autologous (ABMTR) transplants at numerous
institutions. The IBMTR/ABMTR Statistical Center is a division of the
Health Policy Institute of the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, WI.
In July 2004 it was renamed
"Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (CIBMTR)" .
-
The European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation
(EBMT) is a non-profit established in 1974 to promote co-operation amongst
scientists and physicians involved in clinical stem cell transplantation.
The EBMT covers all types of stem cell transplantation and all aspects
of the process, including
including basic and clinical research, education, standardisation, quality
control, and accreditation for transplant procedures.

You must review expert opinions on the medical benefits of storing
these Umbilical Cord Blood cells today for potential use in the
future. Stem cells are extremely versatile, all-purpose cells that can
mature into specialized cells and tissue throughout the human body.
More than 20 years ago, the discovery that stem cells could be
recovered from sources such as the left-over Blood in the umbilical
cord and placenta held out great hope that we would be able to harness
the lifesaving usefulness of these cells in different clinical
applications. Umbilical Cord Blood stem cells have been successfully
used in appx. 5,000 transplants and there is tremendous hope that
these cells can be used in a broader number of indications going
forward. |
